Take a scenic drive through the back roads of New England and you will inevitably spot some of the 240,000 miles of stone walls built by 19th-century farmers trying to delineate their land. You may not have a large plot to mark off, but your patios and flower beds are still deserving of a border, and one that doubles as a place to sit down will make your landscape all the more enjoyable. But no need to dig up the yard looking for rocks like the Yankee farmers had to. A wall built from cast concrete blocks made to look like stone is just as beautiful and much easier to build—especially when your "planting season" is confined to the weekends.
Google is probably the first place where most people would start searching for woodworking plans, but often the top results can be a mix of articles and how-to pieces that just aren’t detailed enough. Sometimes they’ll link to the plans (like we try to here at Lifehacker), but other times, they’re just showing off a cool project. There are better, more precise ways of finding what you’re looking for.

Teds got inspiration from various projects he has carried out in the past. He has created different types of furniture in the past and he wants others to use his plan to create unique furniture and types of woodwork. Because of his expertise in the field, others frequently consulted him. After teaching others, he decided to make things easier for himself and for others by making that plan available for anybody who wants to learn. Ted was not only the most wanted man as far as woodwork is concerned; his Ted Woodworking plans became the most sought after tool in the woodwork industry today.

So far, I considered this just a nuisance, until a spammer sent an email entitled "16,000 Woodworking Plans and Projects", claiming to be from "Wood Gears", with the return email address of woodgears.ca@gmail.com (not my email address). The mailing address included was for 750 Hornby Street, Vancouver BC. Googling that, it's the address of the Vancouver art gallery. I doubt the art gallery has anything more to do with this scam than I do.
Here’s a traditional Swedish farm accessory for gunk-laden soles. The dimensions are not critical, but be sure the edges of the slats are fairly sharp?they’re what makes the boot scraper work. Cut slats to length, then cut triangular openings on the side of a pair of 2x2s. A radial arm saw works well for this, but a table saw or band saw will also make the cut. Trim the 2x2s to length, predrill, and use galvanized screws to attach the slats from underneath. If you prefer a boot cleaner that has brushes, check out this clever project.

Every dollar spent on "Ted woodworking" is a dollar that could otherwise be spent on legitimate quality woodworking content, which would in turn encourage the development of more quality content. But aside from hurting producers, it also hurts the buyer. Whoever buys Ted's plans is no further ahead than they would be by searching for plans using Google. Arguably, they are further behind because they might waste time trying to use Ted's plans instead of finding better woodworking plans for free using Google.

Ted's plans are actually a rather poor subset of what is available on the web for free. The actual number of plans in the package is less than 2500, nowhere near the claimed 16,000. There is a search box on the Ted's woodworking main page that allows you to search the plans, towards the bottom of the front page. Try typing in some random jumble of letters there and see what "results" come up. Further evidence of scam!

To corral shelf-dwelling books or DVDs that like to wander, cut 3/4-in.-thick hardwood pieces into 6-in. x 6-in. squares. Use a band saw or jigsaw to cut a slot along one edge (with the grain) that’s a smidgen wider than the shelf thickness. Stop the notch 3/4 in. from the other edge. Finish the bookend and slide it on the shelf. Want to build the shelves, too? We’ve got complete plans for great-looking shelves here.

Begin by cutting off a 10-in. length of the board and setting it aside. Rip the remaining 38-in. board to 6 in. wide and cut five evenly spaced saw kerfs 5/8 in. deep along one face. Crosscut the slotted board into four 9-in. pieces and glue them into a block, being careful not to slop glue into the saw kerfs (you can clean them out with a knife before the glue dries). Saw a 15-degree angle on one end and screw the plywood piece under the angled end of the block.
